My name is Magen Pastor — I’m a mother, a creative producer, and someone who lost my own father at 17. I remember picking out my outfit that morning. I remember choosing Birds of Paradise for his casket — they were bold, just like him. I remember laughing at a few jokes people told, standing at the front of the chapel shaking hands with everyone, and then sitting graveside, watching as they lowered him into the earth, trying not to cry.
But honestly, I tucked a lot of that away. I had to grow up quickly and keep going. It wasn’t until twenty years later, when my own daughters turned 17 — the same age I was — that everything resurfaced. I looked at them and realized: I was just a kid. And I started wondering what kind of space I’d want them to walk into if they were faced with loss. What kind of place would hold them, comfort them, and honor the person they were saying goodbye to?
We’re not just disrupting the deathcare industry. We’re restoring soul to it — and planting the seeds for something future generations can feel proud to return to.
